Yoga In Schools
My unique brand of children's yoga has been cultivated from many years practicing with and teaching yoga to children in school and as an after school activity in Galway City and County. I integrate diversity into practice through posture, games, mindfulness and breath-work. I encourage children to be inquisitive and creative in their movement while being thoughtful in their actions whilst at play through yoga and games. I also hold a diploma in Early Childhood Education.
What is yoga movement and how can it benefit primary school children?
Yoga movement is a holistic form of movement education for the mind, body and spirit, it can range from 5 minutes to 30 minutes or more. It can be utilized indoors or outdoors on a chair or a mat/blanket when incorporated into the school setting it can help children to:
Alleviate stress and anxiety
Improve memory and attention span
Improve balance, posture and flexibility
Promote self love and acceptance
It covers all of the basic movements that our physiology still requires as we are growing
My yoga in schools program aims to support children regardless of age, ethnicity or ability. The program is designed to give children the tools for successful healthy living.
Please get in touch if you would like learn more about the yoga in schools program or to discuss the possibility of onsite yoga classes in your school.
Yoga is for all ages. We just have to learn what is good for us. Whether you are young or in your prime, there is always a good time to start yoga. Maybe it's about finding a better feeling for your own body, walking safely on your own feet or finding a greater range of motion and strength that supports and enriches everyday life.
Why movement is so important for our Children
Human movement is at an-all time low, this decline will have consequences for the physical, emotional and mental well-being of our children. How can we as teachers, parents and educators promote movement in a world where modern conveniences encourage us to move and feel less? The average Irish child now sits for more than 8 hours a day. Research has linked sedentary behavior to an increased link for obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, joint pain and more.
Childhood stress is at an-all time high, this can lead to changes in the development of the adult brain, developmental delay, moodiness and irritability. How do we recognize and respond to the signs of stress in our children? Mental health problems affect one in ten Irish children and young people. They include depression, anxiety, and conduct disorder, and are often a direct response to what is happening in their lives. The emotional well-being of children is just as important as their physical health. Good mental health allows children and young people to develop resilience to cope with whatever life has to throw at them and grow into well- rounded, healthy adults. Only 17% of Irish children engage in the recommended 1 hour of physical activity a day. Researchers at D.C.U. found that 25% of primary school children (5-11 yrs) cannot run properly, 1 in 2 cannot kick a ball and less than 1 in 5 can throw a ball. Fundamental movement skills (FMS) plateau and stop progressing at around age 10. Lack of fundamental movement skills can affect and underpin a child's future participation in physical activity and sports. The good news is, while the problem feels massive, the solution is quite simple and fun! There are countless opportunities to move, breath, rest, inside and outside in any environment throughout the day!

“Fiona is a wonderful yoga teacher. Her warm, welcoming and caring personality shines through her work. She has endless patience and a great sense of humour. She has an excellent understanding of people’s different abilities and gives alternative ways of doing the poses. She works equally well with adults and with children. As a primary school teacher myself, I admire the way Fiona is so kind and encouraging to the children she is teaching. ”
